What is branding?

A brand can take many forms, including a name, sign, symbol, color combination or slogan. For example, Coca Cola is the name of a brand make by a particular company. The word branding started simply as a way to tell one person’s cattle from another by means of a hot iron stamp. The word brand has continued to evolve to encompass identity — it affects the personality of a product, company or service. It is defined by a perception, good or bad, that your customers or prospects have about you.

When I’m branding, I start out with the logo, or mark. Everything else grows from there.

Goodbye Power Systems

After 5+ years of creating fitness equipment graphics, I am saying goodbye. For various reasons, I have decided to part with my first “big girl” job as a Graphic Designer and embark on a new path, mostly in the same field, but I’ll be wearing a few more hats. I’m still a little in shock and it feels bittersweet, but I’m excited for the chance to be able to do something new. So, I am going to post some of favorite pieces that I created at Power Systems here, and add them to my portfolio as well. Enjoy!

My 2011 Non Goals.

I stole this idea from Design for Mankind. I thought it was really cute.

So, the idea behind my non-goals is to not discredit myself for the good things I’ve already been doing, and to make myself aware of these things, so I continue to do them. So here goes…

1. Don’t stop trying to cuddle with Brekyn. He gets annoyed with me when I try to love on him & kiss him (he’s grown out of it), but I won’t give up.

2. Don’t stop with efforts for Shauhn Caughron Design. So far, with the introduction of Twitter and my Facebook page, I’ve added a good number of followers, and hopefully some type of awareness to the work I do.

3. Don’t forget that I DO enjoy the work I do, regardless of pitfalls.

4. Do keep making time for friends, no matter how busy I am.

5. Do keep taking as many freelance jobs as possible and keep that good rapport with clients.

6. Do keep working on the house, bits at a time, at a budget-friendly pace. And don’t lose stamina.

7. Keep working on focus and time management.

2011 goals.

1. Go on an emoticon diet! It gets annoying, even to myself, but it’s so dang hard to stop! Plus, I feel like I sound slightly less excited or nice if I don’t use them. Must work on this! Starting…… now!

2. Join an online book club.

3. Start attending local meetups for my business interests.

4. Become the most awesome person alive. Jk. Not really.

5. Continue working out for at least 4 days a week. 5-6 on good weeks. I have a Rush membership which is on my way home, a gym at work, and P90X at home. No excuses.

6. Express my opinions more and not be as passive.

7. Be a better listener, and try to help people solve their problems.

8. Be more consistent with my son’s routines.

9. Stop impulse buying.

10. Learn to say no when I can’t fit something into my budget. Even if it’s telling a close friend I can’t attend a get-together he/she is having.

11. Start creating my own design projects, not just paid projects for other people. That becomes a vicious cycle that’s hard to break. Time to break it, and build the portfolio.

12. Be more active in the community.

13. Do more advertising for my company.

14. Start moisturizing my face more often.

15. Start refinishing that furniture!

16. Spell check my spastic typing.

There! I think that’s plenty! Feel free to steal any of these goals for your own list. ( I soooooo want to put a smiley here, but I will refrain.)

Beautiful Boy Rooms

All designers of all types need inspiration. Some more than others. I need LOTS.

All it takes is one image to spark an idea. One item. One thought. One sketch, possibly.

Lately, I’ve been browsing through Twitter quite frequently to find inspiration. Tweeters post amazing things! And very often. I’ve found so many amazing websites, ideas, inspiration from Twitter recently that it’s unreal.

This is one of my new favorite Twitter finds: A blog dedicated to inspiring others by design. The blogger sticks to certain themes: style, bedroom design, matching random people to an interior design style, etc, but she does one thing very well; she keeps the posts short, beautiful, and updated frequently.

I work about 30 minutes away from my home, so every morning I trudge along 30 minutes up the interstate to my workplace. This morning, as I’m driving, I look up and see a beautiful, inspirational scene. The layout was perfect. Gorgeous contrast. Beautiful colors. No time to get out camera and take a picture since it was such a fleeting scene, but as soon as I got to work, I recreated the image as best I could. And here it is:
